Maintenance issues

Deck Maintenance - The deck illustrated above has been repaired three times. On each occasion the timbers were installed flush with each other.
This practice eventually caused the timbers to buckle and lift. Rain and frequent hosing by the owners who have two dogs and two cats resulted in moisture absorption into the timbers causing them to expand. Pressure is then created by each timber on its neighbor which pushes it away causing permanent distortion and lift.
The owner had been reassured that gaps weren't required between the timbers because they are treated pine which does not absorb moisture.
WRONG!
The outcome is to renew the lower deck.
